“Can you recover from sex addiction by praying to God?” (Booth, 2009, p. 120)
Most people who pray to overcome are still addicted to pornography. God hears the prayers of those hurting from sexual addiction. However, for them, prayer did not work.
Spiritually speaking, prayer opens the door for recovery; however, sexual addicts must take steps for recovery (p. 120). I know because I was one of them.
I prayed and remained addicted to pornography. However, when I realized that I had to act on my prayers, answers came to me. I then learned what a “surrendered will” meant to being ready to change.
Living in the present moment, I only had to take small steps to overcome. Other times, I went out of my comfort zone. For instance, going to a therapist and meetings was difficult for me. However, I surrendered my will and did what I had to do to recover.
Keep praying and taking small steps, you find and maintain recovery in doing so.
Booth, L. (2009). Say yes to your sexual healing: daily meditations for overcoming sex addiction. Deerfield; FL: Health Communication.
We, as a married couple went through a weekend and continued therapy to learn how to live, not being “normal”. It is very important when looking for someone to talk to that you make sure they have been in your shoes. Healing is a choice just as being a Christian is a choice. He loves us and therefore will lead us to healing if not all at once.
Thanks for your response. You are right. He loves us and leads us to healing. Once we dedicate our lives to God, we still have some dysfunctional core beliefs to overcome. However, with prayer, you find knowledge on what to do next. God then anoints you with understanding so that you find healing in him.
You are doing the right things; weekends together and therapy. Finding or forming like minded groups also helps the healing process.
Thanks,
Dale
