“How Do I Let Go of Pornography
When It helps with my stress.”
I remember asking this question a thousand times: Yes, a thousand times.
I have been viewing pornography for nearly 40 years. The behavior was engrained into my physiology, body and brain. I could not stop.
Most importantly, I thought I had to quit cold turkey. Once I decided to stop, I had to do it immediately, right then; or, I was a sinner not worthy of God’s love.
The way I look at it now is that God is my Father. He knows exactly what I am going through so He is compassionate with me as I gradually let go of pornography. He understands the power that porn had on me.
He knew exactly what I had to do. I took baby steps.
The process took quite a while, but I succeeded with baby steps. Because of the conditioning that I did to my brain and body, I still have to watch for signs of relapse.
Do You Want to Change?
You have been thinking about it.
The guilt and shame associated with it fuels the desire to quit.
But you ask yourself, “How do I quit? I depend on it so much for relieving stress.”
Yet, you have noticed a cycle of feeling better after masturbating to porn and experiencing inappropriate behaviors afterwards.
You ask again, “How do I stop? Pornography is so much part of my life? I can’t do it.”
The secret is not to rush into stopping or quitting cold turkey.
It could be a disaster for you.
Take Three Baby Steps:
- Ponder on a small behavior to gradually stop doing. Start a list. Put first behavioral change in a journal. Do immediately. When you become successful with the first baby step, write the next step to take. And, do the same for the next step; so forth and so on.
- Take baby step #2. Find a person whom you can trust and share your strategy on how to stop pornography.
- Proceed to baby step #3: Go to step one, now. Repeat the steps.
Taking these three easy steps guarantees positive outcomes. Just keep taking baby steps all the way.
Thanks,
Dale
